    Frequently Asked Questions

Short answer: to make a text presentable before its publication, which includes making it public, either by publishing it on any platform, digital or physical, or presenting it to a group of people.

Obviously, there are cases where proofreading is especially indicated. The first thing to consider is that the absence of proofreading can be a primary reason for the rejection of a document, which is a pity considering the effort and even enthusiasm we have put into preparing a text.

A proofreader conducts a review of the document through a distanced reading in order to detect spelling mistakes, typographical errors, suggest style improvements, etc.

  • Layout the text: that is another editorial task.
  • Publish the book: I am neither a publisher nor a publishing services or printing company.
  • Write reviews: I do not review books, whether published or not.
  • Write synopses (plot or commercial): I am not skilled at this, nor do I have the necessary marketing and SEO knowledge.
  • Offer free advertising for the work or its author, except for mentioning the work (title and publisher only) in my public resume, with the author’s agreement.
  • Serve as a literary coach or intermediary with publishers: as mentioned elsewhere, I cannot guarantee publication or success in sales or reach.
  • Distribute the content: there is a relationship of confidentiality and trust between client and proofreader that is considered sacred.
  • Write the book for you: my job is limited to pointing out errors and suggesting changes; you are the sole and absolute owner of the work.
  • Plagiarize: you have my word that you will not see your text published, not even a part, by me or anyone else. However, for any movement you plan to make with it, it is always advisable to have it registered with the Intellectual Property Registry, on one of the free platforms like Safe Creative, or with a method that can reliably attest to the authorship by its creation or registration date (for example, self-mailing via certified mail).

Yes, and it is highly advisable. This way, you can see my work style and, if it convinces you, hire me. Of course, this trial, which is free, does not imply any commitment on your part.

In principle, I want and need to accept any job, no matter how small or large. However, there are two circumstances in which I would be forced to reject the offer.

The most common would be if you were in a hurry and I already had commitments that would prevent me from guaranteeing the correction on time. However, I can always give you an approximate timeframe to accept it and, if you send it to me, it would be queued for work.

The other, which I hope never occurs, is due to a conscientious objection clause. I will refuse to work on texts that involve situations such as incitement to hatred or defamation, lack of truthfulness or documentary falsehood, plagiarism, books intended to deceive or scam, or texts that incite self-harm, suicide, or acquiring dangerous behaviors.

No, it is not necessary. By requiring my services, both you and I implicitly commit to fulfilling the lines of action described in the “Proofreading contract: rights and duties” document, in the “Rates” section.

However, if you wish and for greater security, it can be formalized, either as described there or a more concise version with the same guarantees. It would be provided to you in PDF format signed electronically by me, and you would need to return it signed, manually or electronically. However, the fact that it is not formalized as a contract does not mean that we do not have to adhere to what is described there.

Naturally, there may be discounts, either for seasons or special reasons, especially if we have committed to a deadline: if I were forced to extend it due to reasons attributable to me, I would give you a discount on the final price.

Likewise, in the unlikely event of there being a significant number of errors that I missed, we would consider a partial refund.

Regarding not finding any spelling errors and/or not having any style suggestions, a 50% discount can be applied, provided that the word count is not less than 15,000. In the case that you have also contracted style correction and there are no suggestions, I would charge only for the spelling correction.

In addition to all this, my commitment is that if I cannot take care of your text, I would declare it as soon as possible and refund the deposit.
